When you take on this race you are riding into history. Much of the route follows the trail that the old wagons used, just over a century ago, to supply paraffin to the lighthouses. From the Danger Point lighthouse you set out, but before you do spare a thought for the famous ship Birkenhead for it was here that she sank in February 1852. It was in this tragedy the ‘women and children first’ protocol was used. The route takes you along gravel roads, spoor farm trails and through the Cape’s fynbos to the L’Agulhas lighthouse. Much of the ride is through privately owned property used exclusively for this event. The closing stages of the out leg follow a coastline treacherous for shipping where many came to an unfortunate end. With the lighthouse in sight you cycle to the most southern point of the African continent.
